THE COLOUR MONSTER

The Colour Monster
The Colour Monster is a great resource to work on Feelings with your students. The author, Anna LLenas,  takes the reader through an emotions journey by focusing on what types of actions you may engage in when you have a specific feeling.

  • For example, “When you are happy you laugh, jump, dance, and play. You want to share that feeling with everyone! “When you are angry, you want to stomp and roar and shout, ‘It’s not fair!'”
  • Each feeling is represented by a colour and pop-up art that makes the whole story three dimensional.

HOW TO USE IT IN A CLASSROOM

Introduce the book to class: A colour monster!

First of all, I will show the colour monster and invite children to describe it. Furthermore, I am going to tell my students that our new friend, the Colour Monster, is all mixed up and he needs some help by learning to “separate his feelings”.

Reading the book

Students appreciate extra materials created by their teacher in the process of the storytelling so, I have created a storytelling prop to accompany The Colour Monster book. Moreover, I got some jars and balls of wool of different colours.

While I am reading the story, my students will separate and introduce each individual feeling in their jars.

Amarillo-Alegría, Azul-Tristeza, Rojo-Rabia, Negro-Miedo, Verde-Calma.
Yellow- happiness, Blue- Sadness, Red- Anger, Black- Fear, Green- Calm

* If you don´t have wool, you could use modelling clay, coloured balls or even cardboard.

HOW DO YOU FEEL TODAY?

Another activity is with this worksheet: resource 2.
They will have to paint their colour monster with the emotion they think our friend is feeling in that moment.

Or they can colour their monster in order to show their own feelings.

I´ve created these resources because I like when they talk about different experiences that make them feel different emotions.
